This slideshow illustrates the various stages of the pencil drawing technique used to create our pencil portrait of a young girl. It should be used along with the more detailed instructions that you can find in our pencil portrait lesson.

Start by positioning the eyes thoughtfully on the page.

Pay particular attention to the angle and proportions of the head.

 Build up the main details lightly in line.

 Begin the tonal drawing of the face with the eyes.....

 .....moving down to the nose.....

 .....and then to the mouth.....

 and finally to the neck.

 The sheen of the hair is created with stronger tonal contrasts.

 The material of the t-shirt requires a softer style of shading.

The tone is balanced overall and a background added for contrast.
